Stephania Stanley graduated with her MFA in Photography in August 2010 from Parsons The New School For Design. She earned her BFA in Photography and BA in Gender Studies in 2005 from Indiana University. Stanley has exhibited at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, participated in numerous open studios, and has curated exhibitions at Parsons. Stanley’s most recent exhibition is her MFA thesis exhibition at Aronson Gallery in New York, NY from August 17th to September 11th.
Stanley’s work, And We All Fall Down, is an ongoing project that explores the moments before a transition caused by loss and tragedy occurs. Using the medium of photography, she captures a representation of childhood in order to explore a transition from unknowing to a place that is more aware. Stanley uses the representation of childhood as a metaphor for a moment that can happen at any age throughout life. It can stand in for a time when one is not necessarily aware of the tragedies that may transpire in life. Throughout the series, she hints at a change and a danger approaching the children in their world; a danger which forces a transition that leaves them more aware, but less complete.
Stanley is also Co-creator of Thursdays (www.thursdaynightdinner.org), a website focusing on food, crafts, and girl-time. She photographs all still life images for the website and portraits of Thursdays contributors.
